Our Current NewsletterDear Friends & Agents of Miombo As the magical “best viewing” months of August and September approach, it’s business as usual at Miombo. Keep watching this spot for our new website to be launched in the next month! We’re delighted to have regular visits from a number of large elephant bulls, buffalo and other game at our waterhole and just the other week, Leigh-anne one of project coordinators reported the following amazing sighting on our concession: “We came across a female herd of elephants and one of the calves came walking down the road towards us. He was only about a year old but he still insisted on giving us a dominance display which we thought was funny. We then followed up the lion spoor hoping to find it but we came across something even better. We spotted some eyes in the distance and when we got closer we were surprised to see a male leopard lying in the grass. We watched him for a bit and after a few minutes a female leopard appeared from the bush next to him. These two must have been a courting pair as the male growled at the female every time she tried to rub up against him, which is a sure sign that they were mating.” In Hwange National park itself the sightings have also been excellent with several lion prides spotted, cheetah, bat-eared fox, herds of elephant 60-strong, buffalo, sable and many other antelope. This year Hwange NP celebrates its 80th Anniversary! Hwange remains one of Africa’s oldest, diverse and most renowned parks, especially for its elephant herds totalling around 30,000. However the Park’s animals are totally reliant on the waterholes – the Friends of Hwange Trust which supports 10 key waterholes in Hwange is in urgent need of fuel and other assistance to get those waterholes through this dry season until the rains. Please contact foh@strachans.co.zw to find out how you can further help one of Zimbabwe’s greatest natural resource assets! We welcome you to Hwange and Miombo and hope you can join us for a bit of well deserved “magic”.
